Fencing, walls, and railings are laid out in linear feet (length) and height in inches. Corner posts are required for each corner and where the fence butts against a wall. You also need 2 corner posts for each opening whether it's a single or double gate. Include gate measurements when you determine linear feet. Sectional fencing, like PVC, comes in pre-measured pieces, but chain link and wood fences require measurements for regular posts. Regular posts are laid out 4 to 6 feet apart. You also need to be aware of your local city ordinances to determine the distance your fence must be away from the property line. If you don't know exactly how many regular fence posts (line posts) you need, or exactly what height is available, we'll help you with some recommendations and advice.
